One Week // One Band: Have I missed the big reveal?
Next up: 2001’s Reveal.
Reveal is Up’s friendlier, more approachable kid sister. An attempt to marry the band’s recent electronic direction with elements that are more recognizably R.E.M.,Reveal is hit or miss; less ambitious and less sonically unified than its predecessor, it…
No, but seriously I am so excited that someone else actually likes Reveal.
I mean, it might be because it’s the first R.E.M. album I bought myself. I mean, my parents bought Out of Time (on cassette, no less!), but for me, being like, what, 5-6 when “Losing My Religion” came out, that song, wonderful as it is, was basically wallpaper. I mean, wonderful wallpaper, but it wasn’t mine.
Reveal was mine. “Imitation of Life” was a single to me. So was “All the Way to Reno.” I bought this CD because it was new and I was starting to enjoy this band. “The Lifting” became my theme song for a while. And as awkward as some of the lines in “She Just Wants To Be” can seem, they A) are in the midst of a beautiful song so who cares, and B) that song’s got nothing on, say, “leaving was never my proud.”
I admit that “I’ll Take The Rain” is drivel. But it’s not as bad as I see it made out to be. Nothing on this record is that bad.
It just seems like the only way that people can enjoy this record is if they heard it before they heard “Murmur,” which strikes me as a bit unfair. It’s really very wonderful. Just give it one more chance. You’ll get the big reveal.
